Cathe
Jones, author of TimeLine, Godless Grief,
and DeepnDarknBlue: One of the best books I've read on submitting
manuscripts, and getting published is by Lori Perkins, An
Insider's Guide to Getting an Agent. If Lori wrote
about buying toilet paper, I'd probably read that, too, but
she's got a way to make the reader feel like she's on the
INSIDE.
Ellen
Hopkins, author of Crank:
My favorite writing book is On
Writing by Stephen King. He and I process
much alike, so for me, everything makes sense. Other writers
take issue with his "forget plot, develop character first"
style, but every editor I saw at the recent SCBWI conference
in LA said the same thing, and I agree. When the "what
if?" muse strikes (i.e., a scenario comes to mind), jot
it down, then create compelling characters that fit the scene.
Let them tell you their stories and see where they take you.
I think many books fail when you try to make your characters
fit into a plot.
